Twenty-six years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Jarrod Lyle, a gentle giant with a heart overflowing with kindness and compassion. I met him not long after his first diagnosis with leukaemia, and though I wish we had met under different circumstances, I am grateful the stars aligned for us to connect. From that day on, we shared a special bond.
Jarrod's life was adorned with achievements, but his greatest pride was in the people he touched and the lives he changed for the better. He was a devoted husband to Briony and a loving father to Lusi and Jemma. Beyond his family, Jarrod extended this compassion to countless others through his work with Challenge as an ambassador, bringing joy and hope whenever he could.
One memory that encapsulates the essence of Jarrod’s character took place during a golf weekend for Challenge Dads at Rich River in Echuca. I invited Jarrod to join us for a round of golf with other Challenge dads, and he didn’t hesitate. Despite the early start and the drive from Shepparton, Jarrod arrived at Rich River on Sunday morning, ready to play.
Throughout the day, Jarrod engaged with each dad, sharing his own experiences and listening to theirs. His openness about his illness and his willingness to listen made a profound impact on everyone. The dads were in awe of him – a professional golfer, battling his own challenges, who had spent the day as “one of the boys.” They couldn’t stop talking about his genuine nature and the respect they had gained for him. They hoped their children could draw inspiration from Jarrod’s outlook on life and his relentless spirit to always give life a go, no matter the hurdles.
This memory encapsulates Jarrod's essence. Despite his struggles, he always saw beyond himself, understanding the power and purpose of his journey. He remained grounded and humble through his successes. Jarrod's life, though short, was meaningful and impactful. He gave families hope and inspiration, encouraging them to never give up.
In his memory, we invite you to join #DoingItForJarrod from August onwards. If you love golf, organise a day at your local golf club to raise funds for children and families living with cancer. Dedicate your day in honour of Jarrod, or someone close to you, and continue Jarrod’s legacy by helping those in need.

His strength and unbreakable spirit serve as a constant source of inspiration, evidenced by the multitude of individuals who continue to uphold Jarrod’s legacy of supporting children and families living with cancer – whether it is by wearing a Leuk the Duck pin or hosting a #DoingItForJarrod event.
Leuk sends all his love to Jarrod’s family and friends – especially Briony, Lusi, and Jemma. Though Jaz may no longer be with us, his legacy continues and always will. It is not often you come across an individual as special as Jarrod – he will forever be etched in our memories for his resolute strength, unyielding courage, and the immense joy he brought to the realm of golf and beyond.
