A DAY IN MAY

ABOUT

The ‘A Day in May’ campaign raises funds annually for Challenge’s Musical Moments Trust – a scholarship that funds positive musical experiences for young children diagnosed with cancer. It costs $500 to provide one Musical Moments Scholarship.

Challenge invites schools to participate by nominating one day within the month of May where students can come to school dressed with a splash of yellow in return for a donation of their choice – no matter how small or large, every cent will help us make a difference.

Musical Moments Trust

The Musical Moments Trust was established in memory of an inspirational little boy who – regardless of his treatment and all that was happening around him – positively embraced life, always radiating joy to those around him. Yellow was his favourite colour and one vital resource that assisted him with having a positive attitude was music. Whether he was singing or dancing, music always brought a smile to his face.

While music therapy is offered to patients during their time in hospital, once a child goes home they no longer have access to this hugely beneficial service.

Challenge has established the Musical Moments Trust Scholarship, which is offered to primary-school-aged children to fund positive musical experiences for them as they move through their treatment and beyond.

Past recipients have enjoyed private and group music lessons, home visits from a music therapist, musical instruments and the chance to create and record a song with a musician.

Music Therapy

Music can be a great source of enjoyment and comfort for children during their treatment, particularly in times of isolation. Music therapy uses a range of techniques to boost a child’s confidence and offers a fantastic way for them to express how they are feeling about what’s happening to them. Some of the benefits of music therapy include the development of positive self-esteem, independence and feelings of control; additionally, there are also effective techniques used for stress and pain management.

Challenge offers individual and group music therapy sessions with a registered music therapist, who tailors musical experiences to meet the needs of each child.
